about

The season of Advent is about anticipation of the coming Messiah, but for the writer of Psalm 80, this waiting brought feelings of grief and pain. Scripture speaks of a "groaning" in creation longing for a Savior. This time of year, our culture bombards us with messages to be merry and bright; to have joy. Those are good things, but there are many who suffer during this time while the lights twinkle around us. Perhaps the loss of a loved one, or unmet expectations for ourselves or others, or the daily battles of anxiety and depression. This Psalm is a prayer of restoration; that in the pain, there is also hope. That God, by his strength, would save us by the light of his countenance.

lyrics

Verse 1
Hear O shepherd of Israel leading Joseph
like a flock, shine forth you enthroned upon high
In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin
and Manasseh come to help us

Refrain

By Your strength, by Your strength
Restore us, O God of Hosts

Verse 2
How long Lord will You be angered
despite the prayers of Your chosen ones?
Tears have been our bread and wine
and our enemies mock us to scorn

Refrain

By Your strength, by Your strength
Restore us, O God of Hosts

Verse 3
Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand
The Son of Man made strong for Yourself
From You we’ll never turn away
Give us life that we may call upon Your Name

Bridge

Show the light of Your face and we shall be saved
